Session 1, June 17: Why the protesting? What is social injustice and what does it have to do with systemic racism and white privilege? Why are people all over the world protesting?

The murder of George Floyd was the spark that set the world on fire, but what were the underlying conditions that were like dry kindling waiting to erupt into flames? We’ll delve into social justice, systemic racism, white privilege, inequality, and equity in this five-session professional development. We’ll be using Robin DiAngelo’s book White Fragility, to drive our inquiry.

Session 2, June 24: Why do we have to have the hard painful, uncomfortable conversations?

Why has it been so difficult for the US to move forward? What role does the educational system play in this? It’s time to have the excruciatingly painful and very uncomfortable conversations. We’ll begin discussing the book White Fragility as it applies to this issue.

Session 3, July 1:  Why All Lives Can’t Matter Until Black Lives Do

Why do black lives matter? Why do all lives suffer when black lives suffer? We’ll look at the effects of systemic racism on various parts of our society – whether it’s in the judicial system, policing, education, health care, finance – and how it negatively impacts us all. We’ll also discuss White Fragility in the context of this topic.

Session 4, July 8:  Let’s Talk about the Confederacy

Why is the Confederate flag so controversial? What is the truth about the Confederacy? What role does the “Lost Cause” play in remembering history? We’ll be delving into Chs 4 & 5 of White Fragility for this session.

Session 5, July 15: Session 5 Topic:  It’s Time to Tell the Real History

What is the history of white supremacy? What really happened with slaves? How did slave patrols, Reconstruction and Jim Crow play a role? Real history is an exhaustive study, so we’ll just touch on some key points. We’ll be delving into Chs 6, 7 & 8 of White Fragility for this session
